Senior Accountant

Our client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join their finance team in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, preparing reconciliations and reports, assisting with audits, and helping strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

This role is well suited to a highly organized accounting professional with strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively with leadership and cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, variance analyses, and other financial reporting packages
  • Reconcile sub-ledger balances to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis by preparing accurate financial data and commentary
  • Assist with external audits by preparing audit schedules, responding to auditor requests, and ensuring documentation is complete
  • Support tax filings, regulatory reporting, and compliance requirements as required
  • Evaluate accounting processes and recommend improvements to strengthen internal controls, efficiency, and accuracy
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian accounting standards, company policies, and relevant tax requirements
  • Provide guidance, review, and support to junior accounting staff as needed
  • Partner with operations, administration, and management teams to provide financial insight and resolve accounting issues

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • CPA designation completed or in progress is strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a corporate, public practice, property, hospitality, construction, nonprofit, or multi-entity environment
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, including ASPE and/or IFRS, as applicable
  • Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting, audit support, and internal controls
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with accounting or ERP systems
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain financial information clearly
  • High degree of accuracy, professionalism, confidentiality, and accountability
  • Ability to identify issues, research solutions, and make practical recommendations
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative finance team
  • Experience mentoring junior team members or reviewing accounting work is an asset
  • Familiarity with Nova Scotia business operations, payroll, HST, and local compliance considerations is an asset
